The day on the war

Ukraine launched over 1,000 drones across Russia, including a significant attack that set an oil export terminal ablaze in St. Petersburg on October 19.

This marked one of Kyiv's largest aerial bombardments of the war. In response, US President Donald Trump criticized Ukraine's strikes on Russian oil infrastructure, suggesting such actions could undermine peace negotiations.

Trump also claimed "great progress" in ongoing hostage negotiations and stated he would not "foolishly" drive Russia away from the bargaining table by imposing new sanctions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, however, accused Trump of attempting to pressure Kyiv into capitulating to Russia. Zelenskyy offered to halt attacks on Russian refineries in exchange for more Patriot air-defense missiles, and confirmed that US intelligence sharing, crucial for defending against missile strikes, has resumed after a temporary interruption.
