The day on the war

Russian forces escalated their aerial campaign against Ukraine's capital, with strikes hitting Kyiv's Northern Bridge for the fourth consecutive day and damaging the National Academy of Sciences, killing two people, during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's solidarity visit. Merz, who witnessed air raid sirens during his visit, condemned the "barbarous attacks on the civilian population." In response, Germany announced a new aid package for Ukraine worth over €1.3 billion, including €1 billion for military support such as combat drones, long-range strike weapons, and satellite technology.

An additional €350 million is allocated to bolster Ukraine's energy sector ahead of winter. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Merz also signed 15 agreements valued at more than €8.5 billion, focusing on security cooperation, weapons production, and joint counter-drone efforts. The intensified strikes align with what Ukraine describes as Russia's "new doctrine" of targeting civilian infrastructure to pressure residents.
