The day on the war

Overnight on August 9, Russian and Ukrainian forces engaged in mutual strikes, causing fatalities and injuries across both nations. In Ukraine, a Russian strike on a residential building in Kharkiv killed two people and injured 12 others, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov. A separate Russian attack on coastal Odesa injured six individuals and damaged cars and residential buildings. Ukraine's Air Force reported intercepting 174 out of 202 drones launched by Russia overnight over northern, southern, and eastern Ukraine.

Conversely, Russia's Defense Ministry claimed to have intercepted 153 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones over Russian territory, occupied Crimea, and the waters of the Azov and Black seas. In Russia's Belgorod region, acting Governor Alexander Shuvayev stated that 13 people, including two children, were injured in overnight strikes, with drone explosions damaging at least four apartment buildings and causing fires.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) also reported on August 9 that Russia is reportedly planning a large-scale strike campaign against Kyiv's energy infrastructure in the coming weeks, aiming to exploit Ukraine's ongoing shortages of ballistic missile interceptors.
