The day on the war

Ukrainian drones struck the Moscow Oil Refinery in the Kapotnya district on June 18, causing a significant fire and sending plumes of smoke over the southeastern part of the capital. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin confirmed that air defense forces were repelling a large-scale attack, with several drones reaching the refinery.

The facility is a critical part of Moscow's fuel infrastructure, supplying a substantial portion of the city's gasoline and diesel fuel, as well as aviation fuel. This strike follows a previous attack on the refinery on June 16, which reportedly damaged a primary oil refining unit and forced a temporary suspension of operations.

Meanwhile, Kyiv faced a fresh wave of Russian missile and drone attacks overnight on June 18, with explosions reported in the capital and other cities like Sumy and Poltava. Authorities in Sumy reported one fatality from a drone attack. Ukraine's Air Force claimed to have downed 212 of 239 drones and 4 of 7 missiles launched by Russia overnight, though two missiles and 26 drones impacted nine locations.
