The story

Indian equity benchmarks opened lower on Monday, October 19, with the Sensex dropping over 500 points and the Nifty 50 testing the 23,000 level in early trade. This cautious start followed the strongest weekly performance in six months for both indices, driven by a rally in IT stocks during the week ended October 16.

India's volatility gauge, the India VIX, climbed 3.34% to 14.52 in early trade on Monday, signaling increased near-term uncertainty. Meanwhile, the Indian rupee strengthened, gaining 9 paise to 94.80 against the US dollar in early trade, supported by the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) structural forex interventions.

On Friday, October 16, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) turned net buyers, injecting ₹1,165.92 crore into equities after 15 consecutive selling sessions. However, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) were net sellers, offloading ₹3,661.28 crore. [9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 20, 21, 26, 29, 32]
