The story

Indian equity markets experienced a volatile session on Monday, October 12, opening with gains before reversing sharply to trade in the red. The Sensex fell over 500 points, slipping below the 72,000 mark, while the Nifty 50 also declined, trading below 22,400 during intraday deals. [17, 18, 19] This downturn came despite a strong appreciation in the Indian rupee, which gained 91-98 paise to trade around 95.75-95.80 against the US dollar. [18, 19, 22, 31] The rupee's surge was attributed to the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) recent measures, including redirecting oil companies' dollar purchases away from the spot market and tightening currency hedging rules to curb volatility. [18, 19] However, persistent foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows, totaling over ₹44,000 crore in October so far, continued to weigh on equity sentiment. [16, 18] Weakness in banking and IT stocks contributed to the market's decline, even as crude oil prices eased slightly, hovering around $103 per barrel. [18, 19]

Valuation watch — India & global

India's equity market continues to present a mixed valuation picture. As of October 9, the Nifty 50 PE ratio stood at 19.27, approximately 12% below its 5-year median of 21.95, suggesting it is moderately undervalued on a historical basis. [8, 9] However, despite this domestic valuation comfort, India has trailed its Asian and global counterparts, with the Nifty 50 being the second-worst performer among major benchmark indices over the past year, down 10.6%. [15] This underperformance is largely attributed to persistent FII outflows, which have exceeded ₹44,000 crore in October alone, bringing the total outflows for 2026 beyond ₹3 lakh crore. [16] External headwinds like elevated crude oil prices and high US bond yields continue to dominate domestic tailwinds, posing a challenge to a sustained rally. [19] Globally, investors are closely watching upcoming US inflation data for cues on future interest rate trajectories, which could further influence capital flows. [5]
