The story

Indian equity benchmarks experienced a significant decline on Monday, September 28, with the Sensex falling over 1,000 points and the Nifty dropping below the 22,850 mark. The Sensex was down 1,007.96 points to 72,887.78, while the Nifty 50 traded at 22,826.10, a decline of 314.41 points [25]. This broad-based sell-off extended the market's losing streak to seven consecutive weeks, the longest since early 2020 [3, 27].

The downturn was primarily triggered by escalating tensions between the US and Iran, after US President Donald Trump rejected a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, pushing Brent crude oil prices above $106 a barrel [5, 8, 15, 23]. This geopolitical development, coupled with a spike in US bond yields and persistent foreign institutional investor (FII) selling, weighed heavily on investor sentiment [3, 15, 23]. All 16 major sectors traded in the red, with financials, metals, and energy-related segments leading the declines [10, 25]. The India VIX, a measure of market volatility, surged over 14% to 13.89, signaling increased investor caution [10, 26]. While Friday, September 25, saw a modest recovery with the Sensex gaining 315.20 points (0.43%) and the Nifty rising 77.40 points (0.34%), Monday's crash largely erased those gains [2, 4, 14, 17].

IPOs & the primary market

India's primary market is set for a busy week, with 20 IPOs scheduled to open for subscription across both mainboard and SME segments, aiming to raise approximately Rs 1,292 crore [7]. This includes four mainboard issues: SRIT India, Vishal Nirmiti, Nityas Gems & Jewellery, and Shah Investor's Home, collectively targeting Rs 595 crore [7].

Additionally, 16 SME offers are expected to raise around Rs 697 crore [7]. The overall mainboard IPO pipeline remains robust, standing at Rs 3.86 lakh crore as of September 2026, which is 3.5 times the Rs 1.10 lakh crore raised through 84 mainboard IPOs so far this year [28].

In the grey market, Orient Cables (India) IPO recorded the highest premium at +₹84, representing a 31% gain over its price band as of September 28 [19]. Meanwhile, the allotment status for Elevate Campuses IPO, which was subscribed 1.89 times, is expected to be finalized today, September 28 [26].

Valuation watch — India & global

Indian equities continue to face headwinds from elevated valuations and global uncertainties, contributing to the ongoing market correction. The Nifty 50 has declined approximately 5.8% over the past seven weeks, with the Sensex down nearly 8% in 2026, reflecting investor caution [27, 35].

The current market sentiment suggests that global geopolitical tensions, particularly the US-Iran conflict, and persistently high crude oil prices are overpowering domestic tailwinds [10, 18]. Analysts note that Indian stock markets are experiencing a correction influenced by these global factors and what they term as "excessive valuations" [18]. The rise in the India VIX, a measure of expected market volatility, further underscores heightened risk aversion, signaling that the market remains sensitive to external shocks and a potential recalibration of valuations.

Monsoon watch

India's 2026 southwest monsoon season has remained in deficit territory, with rainfall 13% below normal as of August 27, compared to a 5% surplus at the same time last year [22]. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had initially forecast a weak monsoon for the year, at 90% of the long-period average, due to developing El Niño conditions [22].

While July saw some recovery, reducing the deficit from around 40% in June, this improvement stalled through August [22]. Consequently, the performance of September rains remains critical for the outcome of the Kharif crop season, directly impacting agricultural output, rural incomes, and national inflation dynamics [11, 22].
