The story

Indian benchmark indices opened higher on Monday, September 21, with the Sensex gaining over 400 points and the Nifty 50 also in the green. The BSE Sensex jumped 448.32 points to 74,743.28 in early trade, while the NSE Nifty was up 50.3 points to 23,396.70.

This upward movement was primarily driven by cooling global crude oil prices, with Brent crude falling 2.25 percent to $101.5 per barrel. Additionally, fresh inflows from Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) bolstered market sentiment, as FIIs bought equities worth ₹599.54 crore on Friday, September 18.

Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) also remained net buyers on September 18, purchasing equities worth ₹1,019.69 crore. Positive trends in Asian markets, including South Korea's Kospi and Hong Kong's Hang Seng, provided a supportive regional backdrop.

Among Sensex firms, UltraTech Cement, InterGlobe Aviation, and Asian Paints were notable gainers, while Infosys and Adani Ports saw declines. The rupee also strengthened modestly against the dollar, trading at 95.888, down 0.17%.

IPOs & the primary market

The primary market saw Manika Plastech make a flat debut on Monday, September 21, listing at its issue price of ₹43 per share on both the BSE and NSE. Several IPOs are concluding their subscription periods around this time.

Axiom Gas Engineering, which opened on September 17, is set to close today, September 21. Sonaselection India and Kheria Autocomp also close today after opening on September 16 and 17 respectively.

The highly anticipated National Stock Exchange (NSE) IPO closed its subscription on September 20, with a subscription rate of 1.42 times. Looking ahead, this week will see new issues open, including Vivekanand Cotspin, FX Multitech, and Robokidz Eduventures, all scheduled to open for subscription from September 21 to 23. Valuation watch — India & global

India's market valuations remain a point of discussion, with Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) having recorded outflows of ₹23,676 crore through exchanges up to September 19, 2026, partly attributed to elevated market valuations. The Nifty 50 is currently noted to be around 3% lower than its August close, reflecting the impact of recent FII selling.

The India VIX, a measure of market volatility, was at 11.5975 in early trade on September 21, suggesting a relatively stable sentiment for the day. Globally, discussions around IPO froth and high PE multiples continue, but specific fresh data points for global valuation benchmarks like the US CAPE ratio since September 18 are not prominent in the search results.

Monsoon watch

India's southwest monsoon is entering its withdrawal phase, starting from western Rajasthan around September 19, with the season concluding with a nationwide rainfall deficit of approximately 14 percent as of September 7. This marks the sharpest shortfall in recent years, contributing to stress on kharif crops across many regions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts continued below-normal rainfall for the remainder of September, indicating that the deficit is unlikely to narrow significantly before the official end of the season. As of September 4, kharif crops were sown across approximately 108.6 million hectares, about 1.63 percent below the normal area for this period.
