The story

Indian equity benchmarks experienced a mixed and volatile trading session on Thursday, August 13, 2026. The Sensex managed to close higher, gaining 113.61 points, or 0.15%, to settle at 78,079.96. In contrast, the Nifty 50 slipped 40.10 points, or 0.16%, to finish at 24,395.85. The Bank Nifty also saw a decline, dropping 250.60 points, or 0.43%, to end at 57,635.25.

Early Friday, August 14, Indian markets opened lower, with the Sensex falling over 250 points and the Nifty down more than 60 points. This cautious sentiment was influenced by persistent geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East and concerns over elevated crude oil prices, which traded around $87 per barrel. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers on August 13, offloading equities worth ₹510.69 crore, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) provided support by being net buyers of ₹4,353.09 crore. Sectorally, financial services and metal stocks were major drags, while FMCG, consumer durables, and IT sectors showed some resilience.

Valuation watch — India & global

Indian equities are witnessing a reassessment of valuations as global and domestic factors create a cautious environment. While global markets show some recovery from US inflation concerns, local indices face headwinds from ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and recent price declines.

Globally, the AI-driven market rally has introduced volatility, with investors scrutinizing lofty valuations and rising competition. For instance, South Korea's KOSPI recently rebounded 18% after a significant decline, and SpaceX's market value dropped by nearly $1 trillion since its June IPO, highlighting areas of potential froth and investor concern. India's market sentiment remains pressured, with a slight uptick in the INDIA VIX signaling increased investor anxiety.

Monsoon watch

The southwest monsoon has reduced India's cumulative seasonal rainfall deficit to 11.5% below the long period average (LPA) as of August 1st. However, Kharif crop sowing remains sluggish, with total planted acreage trailing by 3.88 million hectares year-on-year as of late July.

By August 7, Kharif crops were planted at 87.7% of the expected seasonal average, but acreage for critical crops like rice and pulses is still behind last year's figures. Live storage in 166 major reservoirs stands at 44.39% of capacity. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts below-normal rainfall for both August and September 2026 due to strengthening El Niño conditions.
