The story

Canada made history at BC Place in Vancouver, thrashing Qatar 6-0 for their first-ever men's World Cup victory. Jonathan David was the star of the show, netting a hat-trick (29', 45+3', 90+2') to become the first player from a host nation to achieve such a feat since 1966.

Cyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute, followed by Nathan Saliba's goal in the 64th minute and an own goal from Mohamed Al Manai in the 75th minute. The match was also marked by two red cards for Qatar, with Homam Ahmed dismissed in the first half and Assim Madibo in the second, reducing them to nine men. A serious injury to Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone in the second half cast a bittersweet shadow over the dominant performance.
