Tielemans volleys Villa to a first European crown in 44 years, Arsenal already champion
Aston Villa demolished Freiburg 3-0 in Istanbul to end their continental wait; hours earlier Arsenal were confirmed Premier League champions without kicking a ball — and Tuchel named England's World Cup 26 this morning with Palmer, Foden and Maguire all left out.
The story
Tielemans struck in the 41st minute — not a scramble, not a deflection, a clean volley from the edge of the area that left Freiburg goalkeeper Flekken rooted. That was the moment the Europa League final was won, though Vodafone Park in Istanbul gave it two more: Buendía curled a free kick into the top-left corner in first-half stoppage time, Rogers swept in a Buendía cross 13 minutes after the break. Aston Villa 3, Freiburg 0. Unai Emery's first European title with the club, the first for Villa since they lifted the European Cup in 1982. The backdrop made the 48 hours extraordinary: twenty-four hours earlier at Vitality Stadium, Haaland equalized in the 91st minute for City but the 1-1 draw had come too late — Junior Kroupi's 39th-minute opener did its work long before that, and Arsenal were confirmed Premier League champions for the first time in 22 years. Arteta watched it at home, barbecuing, and kept his composure as the notification arrived. On May 30, he takes Arsenal to Budapest: PSG, Champions League final.

The Road to the World Cup
20 days to kickoff. First match: Mexico vs South Africa, Estadio Azteca, Mexico City, June 11, 15:00 local. FIFA has confirmed a star-studded opening ceremony at the Azteca — the first World Cup opener on Mexican soil since 1986.
England squad announced. Tuchel named his 26 at Wembley this morning. In: Bellingham (Real Madrid), Saka (Arsenal), Kane (Bayern Munich), Eze (Arsenal), Madueke (Arsenal), Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest). Out: Foden, Maguire, and Cole Palmer — the Chelsea midfielder's exclusion the headline shock.
Canada doubt. Captain Alphonso Davies suffered a hamstring tear in Bayern Munich's Champions League semi-final on May 6. The 4-6 week recovery window puts him in a desperate race against time — Canada are yet to confirm their final 26.
Brazil's injury crisis. Rodrygo (torn ACL), Militão (hamstring surgery) and Estêvão (grade 4 hamstring strain) are all ruled out. Carlo Ancelotti's squad is short of proven senior options wide and at centre-back heading into the tournament.
Heat protocols letter. A letter co-signed by dozens of current players was submitted to FIFA on May 20 calling for mandatory water breaks and adjusted kick-off times across US host venues to manage the summer heat risk.
USA warmup confirmed. USMNT face Germany at Soldier Field, Chicago on June 6 — five days before the host nation opens the tournament. An earlier friendly against Senegal at Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, is set for May 31.
The match that stayed with us
Freiburg had seen nothing like it. Tielemans took the ball on the half-volley 20 yards out in the 41st minute, opened his body, and drove it low into the bottom-right corner before Flekken had shifted his weight. The second came in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time: Buendía spotted the Freiburg wall drifting and curled a free kick around the outside of it into the top-left corner. Rogers added the third on 58 minutes, sidefooting in a low Buendía cross from six yards. Emery's Villa — European royalty in 1982, continental tourists since — walked off the Vodafone Park pitch having never been seriously threatened. The coaching staff of a squad built through smart recruitment over three seasons lifted the trophy together.
