South Africa defeats Australia by 67 runs in 1st ODI; Sri Lanka levels series against England.
Matthew Breetzke's century and Keshav Maharaj's four-wicket haul secured the Proteas' victory, while Kusal Mendis's ton helped Sri Lanka draw level.
The story
At Kingsmead in Durban, South Africa secured a 67-run victory over Australia in the first One Day International. After being put in to bat, the Proteas posted a challenging 297/8, largely thanks to a magnificent century from Matthew Breetzke, who scored 112 runs off 106 balls.
He was ably supported by Marco Jansen, who blasted a rapid 75 off 59 deliveries, helping to accelerate the innings in the death overs. Australia's chase started brightly, with Mitchell Marsh contributing 60 from 36 balls, but their innings faltered dramatically.
They lost nine wickets for just 101 runs, eventually being bowled out for 230. The collapse was orchestrated by South Africa's spin attack, with Keshav Maharaj leading the charge with impressive figures of 4/20 from 9.2 overs. Bjorn Fortuin also chipped in with two wickets, as South Africa took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
