The story

Day 4 of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka at Galle International Stadium saw India extend their lead, despite losing five wickets in their second innings. Resuming with a 178-run advantage, India began their second innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal falling for a duck in the opening over, caught behind off Asitha Fernando.

KL Rahul (35) and Devdutt Padikkal (44) then forged a 65-run partnership to steady the innings. Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya broke the stand, removing Rahul and later trapping Shubman Gill lbw for 8. Keshara Nuwantha picked up the crucial wicket of Devdutt Padikkal, who missed a well-deserved fifty, dismissed for 44 just before lunch. After the break, Dhruv Jurel's brief stay ended when he was caught behind off Asitha Fernando for 7, leaving India effectively 298 runs ahead with five wickets down.
