Zimbabwe Stun Bangladesh by 25 Runs in Thrilling Low-Scoring ODI
Nahid Rana's record-breaking six-wicket haul for Bangladesh was in vain as Zimbabwe defended a modest total to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
The story
At the Harare Sports Club on Monday, Zimbabwe pulled off a remarkable 25-run victory against Bangladesh in the first One Day International. After being put in to bat, Zimbabwe were bowled out for just 141 in 36.4 overs, largely due to a sensational spell from Bangladesh's Nahid Rana, who claimed career-best figures of 6/21 – the best by a Bangladeshi in ODI history.
Chasing a seemingly straightforward target, Bangladesh's batting line-up faltered, collapsing to 116 all out in 33.1 overs. Zimbabwe's bowlers, led by captain Richard Ngarava (3/31) and Brad Evans (3/34), applied relentless pressure from the outset, reducing Bangladesh to 17/3 early on. Despite a resilient 49-run partnership between Towhid Hridoy (25) and Nurul Hasan (31), Newman Nyamhuri, who contributed a crucial 33 runs with the bat, broke the stand and triggered a further collapse. Nyamhuri was later named Player of the Match for his all-round contribution.
Meanwhile, in Antigua, Day 4 of the second Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka saw West Indies dismissed for 499 in their first innings in reply to Sri Lanka's 549/9 declared, reducing the deficit to 50 runs. Justin Greaves anchored the innings with a dogged 180 runs from 325 balls, supported by Shai Hope's 112, as they built a 242-run fifth-wicket partnership. Sri Lanka's Asitha Fernando took 5/130, while Prabath Jayasuriya claimed 3/131. By stumps, Sri Lanka had reached 92/2 in their second innings, extending their overall lead to 142 runs with Dinesh Chandimal (40*) and Kamindu Mendis (30*) at the crease.
