The story
At Kennington Oval, Day 2 of the second Test between England and New Zealand saw the visitors gain a strong advantage. Resuming on 291/7, New Zealand's lower order, led by Glenn Phillips, pushed their total to 391 all out.
Phillips, who started the day on 49 not out, went on to score a magnificent maiden Test century, finishing with 100 before being the last man dismissed. Kyle Jamieson also contributed a valuable 41.
England's debutant Jacob Bethell was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets. In reply, England faced a disciplined New Zealand attack.
Despite starts from Ben Duckett and Emilio Gay, who made a fifty, England struggled against Matt Henry, who dismissed both Joe Root and Harry Brook. At stumps, England were 222/6, trailing New Zealand by 169 runs, with Jordan Cox and Jofra Archer at the crease.
