New here? The 60-second primer

Skills are packaged expertise you install into an AI assistant: Claude Code has skills and plugins (from Anthropic's directory and open git marketplaces), ChatGPT has custom GPTs (the GPT Store), and Google's Gemini has Gems (shareable custom experts). Every rank below comes from captured data — official install counts, GitHub star growth, and the GPT Store's own trending list — not from opinion.

The week

The AI skills ecosystem saw significant platform evolution this week. Google began its phased rollout of Gemini Gems transitioning into "skills," a move that will convert existing Gems into reusable instructions invoked via slash commands, starting October 5 for Workspace users and October 13 for the Gemini app.

This shifts Gems from dedicated personas to integrated capabilities within conversations. Meanwhile, Anthropic introduced a major update, merging Claude's chat and Cowork experiences into a unified workspace.

This integration brings Claude Docs, Slides, and Design directly into conversations, allowing users to move seamlessly from research to finished documents or visual work. Anthropic also launched Claude Haiku 5.5, a faster model for high-volume tasks, and lowered prompt cache read pricing for Claude Sonnet 5.5.

On the OpenAI front, GPT-6 was rolled out globally to ChatGPT users on both free and paid plans, replacing previous models. These developments underscore a broader trend towards more integrated, specialized, and production-ready AI agent capabilities.

Pattern watch

A clear pattern emerging this week is the consolidation and integration of AI capabilities into unified platforms. Google's transition of Gemini Gems into more modular "skills" and Anthropic's merger of Claude Chat and Cowork into a single workspace both reflect a move away from fragmented AI tools.

This aims to reduce friction for users by allowing AI to handle multi-step workflows and integrate specialized functions directly within a core application, rather than requiring users to switch between separate interfaces for different tasks. This trend suggests platforms are striving to become central hubs for diverse AI-powered activities.
