Alibaba Unveils Zhenwu V900 AI Accelerator, Claims China's Most Powerful Chip
AI compute capacity continues to expand globally, with new high-performance chips emerging and innovative distributed datacenter models gaining traction to address power demands.
The story
Alibaba Group has unveiled its Zhenwu V900 AI accelerator at the Apsara Conference 2026, positioning it as China's most powerful AI chip. This new training and inference processor features 216 GB of GPU memory and 1,200 GB/s of inter-chip bandwidth, claiming three times the performance of its predecessor, the M890.
The Zhenwu V900 is designed to support the training of future Qwen models in the 5 to 10 trillion parameter range and can scale out to supernode clusters comprising up to 500,000 cards. Mass production and commercial release are targeted for the first quarter of 2027, an accelerated timeline from earlier roadmaps.
This development signals Alibaba's ambition to bolster domestic AI infrastructure and reduce reliance on foreign silicon. Concurrently, a new approach to compute expansion is emerging in the US, with Sunrun and SPAN partnering to deploy distributed AI data centers within residential developments.
Announced on September 25, these systems combine compute nodes, each containing 16 liquid-cooled NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs, with solar and battery storage to leverage unused home connection capacity. Initial deployments are planned for Texas, offering a novel model for scaling AI inference infrastructure.
